Hello, Music Fans, Friends, and Family!

Our shows in December and early January went fabulously. We picked up serious new fans at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, some of whom bought tickets to Jimmy LaFave’s sold-out New Year’s Eve extravaganza at Threadgill’s Old No. 1, a show we were honored to open, and we received a standing ovation for our set with Durawa at Strange Brew, Lounge Side. We are liking this a lot!

We have had a surprise January booking arrive, on very short notice, which has prompted the early issuance of my February newsletter. We will cover for Riley Osbourn and Floyd Domino who have been holding down Wednesday nights at Threadgill’s Old No. 1 with their Four Hands Boogie Woogie presentation. Here’s the scoop, and a look at a few other events, where Hank will appear as a sideman, and where Shaidri will appear with her other duo partner, Ezra Reynolds, keyboards and vocals.

Admission is free, tips are appreciated, the sound and the mixmaster are excellent, and so are the food and the hospitality. We played our first-ever duo gig in Austin here in June of 2008, and always enjoy returning. Eddie and Sandra Wilson and the whole Threadgill’s crew have given us tremendous support.

I will ride shotgun with DC Bloom, on whose most recent CD, The Rest is Commentary, I laid down a few mandolin and vocal tracks. I’m working with DC on his next album, helping with production. I enjoy him, and his music, and this should be fun. I’ll bring a guitar and a mandolin, and try not to get dizzy on the merry-go-round!

This summary judgement of two guys who both play guitar and mandolin and write songs and make lots of silly jokes bodes well for the planet and the universe. You can’t have too much of this, unless you already have too much of it. Apt catchphrases to describe this act include “Almost famous in the slow moving pictures!”, and “Armed with string instruments and short attention spans!” If you think that sounds ridiculous you may just be right, but you will never know if you don’t catch their show. If this is their first, be alarmed that it will not be their last. They might also draft a young female vocalist, who plays fiddle. Developing…

Fans of Shaidri Alrich who would love to hear her sing lead for an entire set, take note: the place to be is G & S Lounge, in the Main Bar room, where Shaidri, with her bandmate Ezra Reynolds on piano, will deliver a solo set for John Conquest’s 3rd Coast Music “Girl Friday ~ All Women, All Day” showcase series. Other band members may be announced as we get closer to the date.

Hank & Shaidri return to the G & S Lounge Music Room for another fine and fun showcase under the John Conquest 3rd Coast Music banner. No two sets the same, and a great chance to hear us up close and personally, for little outlay. G & S Lounge is superbly stocked with a huge variety of brewed, fermented, and distilled beverages, and this year will have food trailers on site, making possible an all-in-one experience encompassing music, food, and drink. This, ladies and gentlemen, is South Austin in superb form. We may well be joined by other pickers. Updates will follow!

We always enjoy playing Threadgill’s “Old No. 1″, the scene of so much outstanding Austin music history. This time we are extra-pleased to have the luminous Tom Corbett with us, mostly on mandolin, with some extra guitar work on the side. Tom is one of the world’s great pickers, and a marvelous human being, too.

The original Threadgill’s in north Austin has been our center as we’ve developed our music over the last few years. Eddie Wilson gave us our first Austin set there in June of 2008, one thing has definitely led to another, and we still consider this our musical home in Austin. Bluegrass Brunch is a marvelous affair, offering a complete Brunch Buffet featuring Migas, Grits, Biscuits & Gravy, Bacon & Sausage, an Omelet Station, Pancakes, Fresh Fruit and more. Have all that managed and wrangled by the stellar Threadgill’s crew of hospitable humans, add a good sound system and operator, and we’re ready to brunch in the name of bluegrass! Having Tom with us will make it just that much more tasty!

Here we go! Last Call for our 2015 NotSxSW showcases, and it’s a nice one, with nearly a full hour to play. Thanks to Mark Viator & Susan Maxey, co-hosting in the name of John Conquest’s 3rd Coast Music magazine, for this happy opportunity! Catch their set, too, at 4:30PM, all at G and S Lounge in South Austin.

Come relax into a beverage and help us see this party on its way. Note that we will be followed by the inimitable John Lilly! You know we will be staying for his set! You should do that, too. (Not to be bossy or anything like that!)
